So here is my contents page finally! my previous one got deleted due to my computer crashing. It done me some justice anyway as I have improved on my contents page anyway. However I still used some inspiration from the previous one such as the positioning of letters. I even decided to call my contents page 'BRONXTENTS'. I felt that the pun added humour and was a unique idea in comparion to other magazines. I also cut sections out of the pictures so I could add text in them. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my conetents page as I feel it really challenges normal conventions. Reason being because it is done on two pages instead of one and the title is normally small however my one nearly takes up a quater of one page but still blends well. I also feel that my contents page is very informative as the captions are detailed. The overall page would appeal to my target demograpic as there are different colours and images of people that would interest young people from the ages 15-25. I also tried my best to fill any gaps on the page.
So I started working on my contents page. Looking at other contents pages, I found this one from Q Magazine. I noticed that it was done on two pages and decided to do the same as it challenges the normal conventions of other contents pages. I also loved how sections of the pictures were cut out so text could be placed there instead. The text contained little information relating to the picture which gives the reader a brief sypnopsis of what it is about. I decided to also use this idea.
As you can see here, you can see everything is starting to take place. I was able to chance the font with the option and add page numbers on my images to direct the reader. I was also able to type into the section I had cropped out to create a similar effect to the Q Magazine contents page. I had also created the illusion that there is a fold in the middle of the page. I done this by copy and pasting an actual image of a fold then decresing the opacity.
Here is how I created the illusion that there is a fold in the middle of my page. Firstly I made sure my mesurements were correct. Then, I found an image of a page fold that looked realistic however it was for the corner of the page instead of the centre. I then had to rotate it so it was a straight line. I then reduced the opacity of the image so the lines were not as sharp and did not look unrealistic. After this I painted over the 'page fold' so it does not look like there are 3 pages in one. After doing that, I had to neaten the shadows and lines so it could all blend together, I was very proud of the outcome as doing this on photoshop was too difficult with me.
So as you can see here my page is starting to take shape. With a few more pictures and different colours, I started to see improvements. I added small captions with little opacity on the pictures to make it look more colourful and interesting. I used the same colour for the caption and one of the sub-headings so there is a constant colour scheme, so it's not too colourful. I also kept a constant theme with my font as the page numbers on the images is the same font for the contents page title and headings. If there is too many different fonts, the page will look messy.
composition. I liked the way the word 'dripped' down on the side of the page. This also helps to fill any gaps on the page, making it look more full. I also used a soft red colour which contrasted with the all the other colours I used however it looked good. It also challenges the normal conventions of a magazine contents page especially music ones. Many music magazine contents pages look wonderful however they are quite plain and have little on the page with mainly one large image.
Using a software called Pixlr, I cropped the image I was going to use I took at a concert because it was much easier and quicker. Because my background was white, the box I cropped had to be white also so it could all blend. So when I put the text in, you would not be able to tell the difference. I had to keep the boxes small because too much text in the contens page is not needed. Too much text would also make your contents page look too busy which is not the effect I want to create.

During the process of completing my contents page, I came across this image from Vibe Magazine. I noticed how the word 'Contents' were on top of eachother but still readble. I really loved the look of this and decided to use this idea in my contents page, instead with the word 'BRONX' .
Below you can see my attempt of this. It was harder as BRONX only has four words. However placing the X on the bottom created a lovely -

jHere is my double page spread finally! After debating if I should create a new one or not, I decided to stick to using pictures of Emeli Sande. I used inspiration from vibe magazine as their double page spread's have one large image on one side and an article on the other. I also used a quote from one of her songs in a different font and colour which makes the page look more interesting. What's more interesting is that I used Microsoft Publisher and not photoshop. After many failed attempts of trying to create my page, I decided that publisher is much more easier and quicker. Publisher also managed to create the same look I hoped to create so therefore it did'nt
matter if I used photoshop or not. Here, I used a software called Pixlr to create different fonts. It has a range of fonts ranging from retro to novelty. I decided to use a 'handwritting' font. This made my page look less formal and more colourful. The bright red goes well with the white background and black font. On pixlr you are also able to edit pictures. This was the clearest image I had of Emeli and with some
editing, the picture looked very professional. Also I put the magazine name behind the text by reducing the opacity of the text. By making the text a lighter red, this created a more of a colour scheme for my page which made it look moer interesting.Wednesday, 29 January 2014
Here is my flat plan of my new desired front cover. It is much more simple in comparison to my old one. This was the initial plan for my magazine. This week I plan to take pictures for my new front cover and contents page and hope to get both done this week. I feel that although my new front cover is more simple it would be more effective. XXL magazine has a similar layout where they just use one main image as the focus of their magazine rather than smaller images scattered around the page. I feel that this looks too much like mainstream magazines and it does not stand out. However I really want my one to stand out and make a statement.

On the left is an image of my final front cover, and on the other side is an image of I-D's 'youthful' issue. Before I started my front cover, I visioned my front cover to be more like this one. Although I like my first attempt, I am not 100% happy with it. Because I have not got long left, I have to take new images as quickly as possible.

Here is a particular contents page I like the look of from Vibe Magazine. It challenges most conventions of a typical contents page, the unusual order of the lettering really stands out for me. It is unique therefore the reader could see that this magazine is different from the rest. The grey gradient backdrop can be seen dull and boring however it looks sophisticated and classy. The V shape seen in the background stands for Vibe. I noticed how the models legs are also in a v-shape, making the page more creative. Also, the use of the model makes the page looks even better. She is wearing very simple colors. This makes the page look natural and not so 'messy'. She is also very attractive, this could also appeal to more male readers. The image of the model is a direct mode of address as she is looking straight at us, this will instantly attract the reader. Finally, the page is informative and easy to read. Different fonts have been used for the text however it all flows and fits in with the page.

Here is a mood board of different contents pages. As I have not completed my contents page yet, this would give me a few ideas of how to lay my one out. I have noticed different conventions are used for different genre types. The music magazines tend to have larger images rather than fashion/celebrity gossip etc. They focus more on the text. The layout is also more 'messy'. During my research of contents page layouts I have decided to take inspiration from Vibe Magazine. I will do a deeper analysis of the contents pages.

The 21-year old has stripped things back on the new version of the ballad, showing off her vocals rather than her body. The video currently stands on 368,809 likes and 198,449 dislkes. Despite Miley's previous socially unacceptable antics, this video seems to be doing her justice. On my blog, I uploaded some news about Miley and her smoking on stage. Keeping my readers updated on particular artists would be a good idea. They are also up to date with music news.
J. Cole, Busta Rhymes and Bruno Mars are also slated to perform at various Super Bowl weekend events!
Kendrick Lamar is slated to perform at the ESPN Super Bowl Party at Pier 36 in Manhattan, New York. Robin Thicke joins him on that line-up. The Roots are set to join Run-DMC, Busta Rhymes and others as part of Bud Light Hotel's concert showcase bill, which is slated to take place at Bud Light Hotel Amphitheater in Manhattan, New York. Drake, Diddy, J. Cole and Busta Rhymes are among several rappers slated to perform at Super Bowl weekend events. Upcoming events such as this would interest my readers as they are highly anticipated. The artists performing all specialize in hip-hop and rnb too.
During some general research I found out that legendary hip-hop duet OutKast have confirmed a 40-date tour, according to MTV news.

Here, I have created another mood board. This time with more pictures. I have added pictures of mainly rnb and hip-hop artists as my magazine genre focuses on this. My mood bored has a picture of the late Aaliyah Haughton,Tupac Shakur and the iconic rap group, NWA. These are some of the many artists that has made a big impact on music today and I want to keep this sort of history within my magazine, remembering those who paved the way for artists today. I have also included images of artists and actors that were really popular during the 90's such as rnb group TLC and Will Smith. I want to entwine the 'old school' feel to my magazine as I find that many young people prefer this to today's music. As this is my target demographic, I would have to include images and information that suits their interests. Also, there are not many music magazines that talk about hip-hop and rnb during the 80's and 90's. Images of the front covers of Source magazine has also been included in my mood board as I loved the layout, it is simple yet effective. I hope to take some inspiration from this magazine. Gold teeth also known as 'grillz' and 'boomboxes' are very popular amongst the hip-hop scene, using props in my magazine could also interest my target demographic easily. Finally, I have also aded a picture of two models wearing 'Pyrex Vision Clothing' these sort of clothes are popular with hip-hop artists such as ASAP Rocky and Kanye West. Again, this all relates back to the genre of my magazine. Fashion is a big part of my magazine as it influences young people. I find that whatever celebrities find fashionable, most young people would too.
